Habitat for Humanity Builds New and Expanded Restore Home Improvements Resale Shop

Thanks to $1 Million in Donations From Woodforest National Bank and Anadarko Petroleum

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County announces the construction of its new ReStore building, thanks to $1 million in donations from Woodforest National Bank and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.

ReStore is a non-profit home improvement donation center and resale store that sells new and gently-used furniture, home accessories, building materials, appliances and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price. The ReStore concept reduces sub-standard housing, helps improve living conditions, and is environmentally friendly by re-purposing items for reuse and recycling. Proceeds from the sale of donated items are used by Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County towards its mission of building homes, community, and hope.

Previously located in Conroe at 1501 S. 7th Street, adjacent to the Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County administrative offices and near the Habitat Cedar Creek neighborhood, the new ReStore is located on four acres at 9407 S.H. 242 in Conroe, approximately one and a half miles east from I-45 near The Woodlands. Built by SLI Architects Group, Inc., the newly-constructed resale shop features 20,000 square feet of air-conditioned and heated space, which is a significant expansion from the original 5,000 square-foot building. The new site has expanded outdoor and indoor storage and retail floor space, as well as 81 paved parking spaces and two covered dedicated drop off spots for donations. A community-wide grand opening is planned for early 2016.

“This is such an exciting time for us especially as we mark the tenth anniversary of our ReStore with the construction of this new building,” said Barbara Smith, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County. “Most other ReStores across the country have relocated to a previous retail or grocery store space, so we are fortunate to have the opportunity to build and own a brand new facility in a prime location. We are extremely thankful for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and Woodforest National Bank, which each donated $500,000 to help make this project a reality. The expanded ReStore will provide even greater sustainable funding to support the important work that Habitat volunteers do in this community. We are privileged and honored to have received large lead donations from these two philanthropic-minded organizations.”

Within Montgomery County, many families are living in dangerous, unhealthy housing, and are struggling every day just to get by. People are often surprised to learn that many of these individuals and families work full time, but still cannot afford minimally decent housing because their income is too low for them to qualify for government assistance in housing loans.

Through Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, which is a faith-based nonprofit ministry, they are offered hope for a better future through a self-help solution. In an effort to facilitate decent, affordable homes in partnership with those in need, Habitat for Humanity provides permanent housing solutions to very low-income working families, helping them to become homeowners and break the cycle of poverty.
